Owners ask less whether to change the NA or NB exhaust than how loud they want it. This page lists the systems sellers offer and what owners say about the sound. It is not a repair guide, and emissions rules differ by state.

How to read it. Seller descriptions are from their own pages, and owner accounts from Miata.net forum threads, read on 1 October 2026 and dated below. Owners disagree, and none of it was tested by me. There are no prices on this page.

What is sold

SellerWhat it says it offersFits (as stated)
Flyin' Miataa stainless NB exhaust with a 2.25 in muffler and polished 3 in tip, which it describes as a deep, mellow tone with no rasp. Fits naturally aspirated cars and cars with its turbo or supercharger kits. Lifetime warranty; a 1999-2000 automatic needs an extra midpipe; it may clash with some trailer hitchesNB, 1999-2005
Moss Miataits NA cat-back page lists systems from Cobalt (dual or single tip), ISR Performance, RoadsterSport, and Cusco, and Racing Beat mufflers and a connecting pipe, plus a Mazda muffler for 1994-97 manual carsNA, 1990-97 (some by year range)

Racing Beat's own page on the NB muffler refused my request, so I could not read its claims; Moss also lists Racing Beat's Power Pulse muffler. Flyin' Miata and Racing Beat appear in the thread below.

What owners say

From "Racing Beat vs Flyin' Miata Muffler?" (November to December 2021, NB):

  • Racing Beat. Owners described the Racing Beat muffler as very quiet: one said his dual-tip "sounded stock", another that it gives just enough noise to know you are driving a sports car without drone, and a third that its tone is almost unnoticeable and could pass for a stock muffler. One said it gets slightly louder with use.
  • Flyin' Miata. Owners who fitted the Flyin' Miata axle-back with the stock midpipe called it just barely louder than stock; one with the full naturally aspirated system and a Racing Beat header called it not too loud, no rasp, a nice growl, louder mainly at full throttle. The original poster wanted a deep, throaty tone loud enough to hear on the track but not buzzy.
  • Others named. Posters also mentioned a Magnaflow system with 2.5 in piping (for a planned turbo), and a RoadsterSport system one owner liked. A poster suggested searching for sound clips on YouTube.
  • Emissions. One owner in California said he wanted a midpipe that keeps a CARB-legal catalytic converter. Check your state's rules before changing anything after the engine.

Search results list other exhaust threads and review threads, including a complaint about the Racing Beat Power Pulse muffler on a 1999 car; I did not read them.
