Ignition coils and coil packs fail on every Miata generation, and the NB's 1999-2000 coil pack is the best-known case. This page lists who sells replacements and what owners said. It is not a repair guide.

How to read it. Seller claims are as read on each seller's own page on 1 October 2026. Owner accounts are from Miata.net forum threads, dated below, and are individual experience, not advice. There are no prices on this page, and nothing here was bought or tested.

What owners said

  • The 1999-2000 cars (December 2002). An owner started a Miata.net survey of coil failures on those cars, asking people to report year, mileage and whether Mazda fixed it under warranty, so the owners could complain to Mazda. The symptoms he listed were a check-engine light with codes for oxygen sensor inactivity, random and per-cylinder misfires and catalyst efficiency, and a rough-running engine. (Miata.net thread; I read the opening post, not the whole survey.)
  • Why coil packs fail (April 2007). One poster said heat kills the ignitor electronics inside the pack. Another, with a Miata.net sponsor badge, said the heat from the engine combines with the heat a coil makes when it cannot fire because of a bad plug, wire or sensor, and that anything that causes a misfire will sooner or later kill the pack; he said one of the "improved" packs had failed on him too. A third poster said a pack died a week or two after he cleaned the engine, and a fourth said he had seen many threads about misfires after engine cleaning. (Miata.net thread.)

Search results also describe swapping coil halves left to right to see whether a misfire follows the coil, say a misfire code left unattended can ruin the catalytic converter, and quote an ND owner whose coil failed at about 85,500 miles; I did not read those threads, so treat them as leads.
