Engine mounts and shifter bushings (NA, NB, NC, ND)
Worn engine mounts make a Miata clunk and shake and make the shifter wander, and the NA and NB shifter's own bushings wear too. This page lists what sellers describe and what owner threads said. It is not a repair guide.
How to read it. Seller claims are as read on each seller's own page on 2 October 2026. Owner accounts are from Miata.net forum threads, dated below, and are individual opinions, not advice. There are no prices on this page, and nothing here was bought or tested.
| Seller | What it says it offers | Fits (as stated) |
|---|---|---|
| Moss Miata, engine mount by Mazda | a genuine mount, two needed per car, sold individually, OE reference NC10-39-040 | 1999-2005 NB |
| Moss Miata, replacement motor mount | a replacement mount sold individually; the page gives no other description | 2006-2015 NC |
| Moss Miata, NC engine mount kit by AWR | fabricated steel mounts with polyurethane bushings in the factory location, in four hardnesses (62A, 70A, 88A and 95A); it says they reduce drivetrain rocking between throttle on and off and give cleaner shifts | 2006-2015 NC with the 2.0 litre |
| Moss Miata, NB engine mount kit by AWR | the same kind of kit for the 1.8 litre, in the same four hardnesses, described as a direct bolt-on | 2001-2005 NB |
| Moss Miata, shifter bushing kit by Mazda | a bushing kit for the manual 5-speed that also fits 6-speeds built before 1 August 2001; OE reference PK907182 | 1999-2005 NB |
| Moss Miata, upgraded shifter rebuild kit | a mix of Mazda and aftermarket pieces that it says costs much less than the dealer kit, now with a bronze turret bushing; it says to replace all boots and bushings together, and for a 2001-2002 6-speed to check the VIN: last six digits below 220739 take the early kit, above 220738 the 2002-2005 kit | 1999-2005 5-speed and early 6-speed |
| Moss Miata, adjustable engine mount kit by AWR | steel mounts with polyurethane bushings and an eccentric bolt that lets you set the engine higher or lower, for builds with turbo or supercharger piping; in four hardnesses and described as a direct bolt-on for the 1.6 litre | NA (1.6 litre); page lists 1990-2015 |
| Moss Miata, ND upper engine mount kit by AWR | reinforced upper brackets for both sides that work with an aftermarket or the original header; the page says the original brackets are very weak and break often on the ND and that these are built in the USA; listed as a special order | 2016-2025 ND |
| Good-Win Racing, AWR engine mounts and brackets for the ND | three options, brackets only, mounts only or both: steel upper brackets that replace the factory cast aluminium ones, and steel and polyurethane lower mounts; it says it has seen several cracked factory aluminium brackets | 2016+ ND |
| TascaParts, Mazda motor mount NA5F-39-050 | the genuine driver-side (left) front mount for the 2.0 litre manual; a special order from Mazda | 2016-2025 ND |
Moss's search results also show a separate Mazda shift bushing kit for the 2002-2005 6-speed (907-182), Cobalt kits and an engine mount page for the NA with AWR adjustable kits; I did not open those pages.
What owners said
- An ND with cracked mounts (February 2024). An owner cracked an engine mount under sustained high-g cornering (a right-hand mount failing in a long right turn). He said the first clue was a noticeable shake pulling away and high vibration under load, and that the stock upper mounts seem weak under high lateral load. Replies asked whether it was a 1.5 or a 2.0 and whether he was sliding the car; he said it was a 2.0 and that he was. (Miata.net thread; first page.)
- An NA at 100,000 miles (February 2017). An owner asked when to replace mounts because of a slightly low idle and a little shake. One reply said a poor idle shakes the car whatever the mounts are like, that the clearer sign of broken mounts is sideways movement of the shift lever under hard throttle changes or hard shifts at high revs, that some movement is normal with stock mounts, and that missing gears with a stock engine means too much movement. (Miata.net thread; first page.)
Search results for other Miata.net threads describe a clunk or bang as torque comes on and off, a quick test of watching the engine move when you hold the brake and apply drive, and replacement as a job an owner with a jack can do in about an hour; I did not read those threads, so treat them as leads.
Not covered yet
- Transmission and differential mounts, and the right-hand ND mount and the ND's other lower mounts, of which I saw only the driver-side genuine part.
- Shifter bushings and boots for the NC and ND, and the 2002-2005 6-speed kit.
