Retractable hardtop (PRHT)
The NC's power retractable hardtop (PRHT) is a motorised roof, and when it stops the cause is often simple. This page says what owners found, and where I found nothing to sell. It is not a repair guide, and a moving roof can injure; the owner's manual and a Mazda dealer are the authority.
How to read it. The owner accounts are from Miata.net forum threads that I read in full on 1 October 2026, dated below. They are individual owners' experience, not tested by me, and posters sometimes disagree. There are no prices on this page.
The roof will not move
From a thread from April 2016:
- The conditions. Posters said the trunk must be closed, the car stopped and out of gear for the roof to work, unless a Smart Top module is fitted. A faulty trunk-latch sensor can stop it. One poster said the trunk is often open without the owner knowing, and suspected the key fob in his pocket.
- The windows. The roof lowers the windows a few inches before it moves. One owner's roof stopped because the power window module in the center console had a cracked housing, and the replacement, from a Mazda parts dealer, differed by trim and options (PRHT, keyless, auto-down, colour). He said it was not cheap.
- The dash. The poster whose roof beeped but would not move noticed the radio volume rise when he unlatched the roof (the Bose system compensates for an open roof); the thread did not say what fixed his.
A roof stuck partway
From a thread running from October 2013 to 2022:
- What happened. One owner's roof stopped three-quarters open when he raised it on a slope, and a flashing red light stayed on after he disconnected the battery. His advice, repeated by others: only raise or lower the roof on level ground. Other owners had it stop because a wind deflector sat on the windshield, or because the roof storage well was not clear.
- The workaround owners report. Several posters say a small switch near the roof stowage area, behind the passenger side, freed a roof that had stopped: one person presses it while another presses the dash button. Others say it worked for them (including after the roof worked only intermittently), and one says it did not.
- Disagreement about what it is. One poster said it is not a reset switch but a limit switch, with a separate one for the deck panel; another confirmed from the shop manual that it is the roof's open limit switch, which is pressed when the roof is fully down, and that the wiring diagram shows two roof limit switches and one for the deck panel, all on the right side. They disagreed about which switch some of the photos showed.
- Safety. The poster who described the method called it potentially dangerous and suggested using a stick, and a 2021 poster said he was glad to have kept his fingers clear when the roof started moving. This page does not recommend it. A poster pointed to the procedure in the owner's manual and to another thread, which I did not read.
A hard-to-close roof, or a rattle
In a July 2018 thread an owner who struggled to latch the soft top asked whether the latch is adjustable. A poster said yes, with the same procedure for the soft top, the removable hardtop and the PRHT, from a document he linked (which I did not open). He said the hard part was the snap rings and tiny screws.
What is sold
I did not look for sellers of PRHT parts such as motors, limit switches, the trunk-latch sensor or the window module, and found no owner thread that points to one beyond the Mazda parts dealer above.
Not covered yet
- PRHT parts sellers.
- Mazda's own procedure for a stuck roof, which is in the owner's manual.
- Aftermarket Smart Top modules, which posters mention.
