Some NC owners feel a small lurch when they begin to press or finally lift off the throttle. This page records what one long thread found, which was not a fix. It is not a repair guide, and the thread points to nothing to buy.

How to read it. The owner accounts are from Miata.net forum threads that I read in full on 1 October 2026, dated below. They are individual owners' experience, not tested by me, and posters sometimes disagree. There are no prices on this page.

What owners say

From a thread from September 2016 with a 2019 follow-up on a 2011 car with the manual gearbox:

  • The symptom. A very slight stutter as the throttle starts to open, and again when the pedal reaches the top as the owner lifts off, in the first few per cent of pedal travel, noticeable in the low gears. A friend's near-stock 2013 did not do it. A later poster with a 2007 car described the same, a lurch like a misfire at light throttle, regardless of gear or rpm.
  • A built-in delay. One poster said Mazda programmed a throttle delay into the computer for the low gears, which he thought was a safety feature, and that an ECU tune removes it. The owner replied that what he felt was a brief shaking back and forth, not a delay. I did not find a Mazda source for the claim.
  • What the owner tried. He cleaned the throttle body and, gently, the air flow sensor and saw only fine dry carbon; changed the spark plugs (cylinder 3 had been logging three to five misfires per ten drives, and then none) with no change to the symptom; and fitted a new Denso air flow sensor, which did not help either. He then checked the propshaft and the differential play, and a poster told him a few degrees of free play in the differential is normal. The thread does not say how it ended.
  • Other suggestions. A poster said to clean the throttle body and butterfly edges, which had cured idle and low-throttle problems on his 2006; another suggested injector cleaner and new plugs. The owner also found that a throttle-position reading that never reaches 0 or 100 per cent in a phone scan-tool app is normal.

Not covered yet

  • A confirmed cause or fix; none turned up in the thread.
  • Mazda bulletins on throttle behaviour for the NC; a search turned up nothing I could confirm.
