Recalls and how to check your VIN (NA, NB, ND)
Recalls are the one repair topic where the maker pays, but they cover only certain cars and you cannot tell from the model year alone. This page lists the Miata recall campaigns I found in the U.S. safety agency's records and tells you how to check your own car by VIN. It is not a complete list and not legal or safety advice.
How to read it. These are summarised in my own words from NHTSA's public recall records for the Miata. A recall may cover only some cars of a year, so the VIN check is the only answer for your car. There are no prices on this page.
Check your own car
- NHTSA's recall check takes a VIN or a license plate (I opened the page on 2 October 2026), and says providing them is voluntary.
- Mazda USA's recall page has a VIN search that shows open recalls, the free repair and alternative transportation options (opened the same day); it also links to its Takata air bag inflator information.
Campaigns found for the Miata
| NHTSA campaign | Cars (as listed) | What it was, in my words | The remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 92V159 | 1990, 1992, 1993 (cars with the hardtop hoist accessory) | a hardtop hoist accessory kit whose plastic strap-tension buckles can break after the hardtop is lifted, so the hardtop could fall on someone standing nearby | Mazda to replace all hoists free of charge |
| 03V206 | 2001 (and certain other Mazda models) | the socket holder in the fog lights can work loose after repeated heating and vibration, so the bulb socket and wiring could drop inside the bumper, and rarely the bulb heat could burn the bumper | dealers fit a spring to keep the holder in place |
| 06E026 | 1990, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2001 (equipment: certain replacement lamps) | certain Pro-A Motors replacement lamps sold for these cars lacked amber side reflectors, so they fail a federal lighting standard | the lamp maker to offer owners a repurchase; these were aftermarket parts, not Mazda parts |
| 19V072 | 2016-2018 (automatic transmission cars; the agency text says 2016-2019 MX-5 with automatics) | incorrect programming in the transmission control module can cause an unexpected downshift | dealers reprogram the module with corrected software free of charge |
| 19V496 | 2016 | the skid plate and its metal bracket may come off the underside of the car | dealers replace the skid plate free of charge |
| 21V875 | 2018-2019 (also certain other Mazda models) | the impeller in the low-pressure fuel pump may crack and deform, which could make the pump fail | dealers replace the fuel pump free of charge; owner letters were mailed 18 July 2022 |
| 24V695 | 2016-2023 | a software error in the air bag control module may make the front air bags deploy with too much force in a crash | dealers update the module software free of charge; owner letters were mailed 7 November 2024 |
| 25V336 | 2024-2025 | the traction control and stability control indicator light may fail to light as it should because of a software error | dealers replace the stability control unit free of charge; owner letters were mailed 18 July 2025 |
The app's known-issue entries for the NA hardtop hoist, the ND airbag software, automatic transmission, fuel pump, skid plate and stability control recalls match these campaigns. I found no NC recall in the records I read, which does not mean there is none; check the VIN.
