Soft tops and rear windows
The fabric top, and the plastic or glass rear window in it, is the part of a Miata that wears out by age alone. This page lists who sells replacements for each generation, and what each seller says about its own product. It is not a repair guide; it points at what is for sale and what is not.
How to read it. Every claim is the seller's, as read on its own page on 1 October 2026. This page carries no prices, which go stale; the seller's page has the current one, and whether it is in stock. Nothing here was bought or tested.
Replacement tops
| Seller | What it offers | Fits (as stated) |
|---|---|---|
| Moss Miata | Robbins vinyl, no zipper, standard glass window (12 in by 31 in); Haartz 38 oz Cabrio Grain vinyl; rain rail optional | NA and NB, 1990-2005 |
| Moss Miata | Robbins vinyl, no zipper, defroster glass window; rain rail optional. The defroster window is "a direct replacement for 99 and later Miatas"; a 1990-97 car without the factory hardtop needs an optional wiring harness | NA, NB and NC, 1990-2015 |
| Moss Miata | vinyl top with glass window by Xtreme | NC, 2006-2015 |
| Moss Miata and Moss Miata | Robbins canvas, no zipper, defroster glass; one with Infinity bonding, one with Permalok | NC, 2006-2015 |
| Leroy Engineering (Chardon, Ohio) | Robbins, defroster glass; vinyl or cloth, zipper or none; includes a new rain rail. It says Robbins does not stock every variation and there may be a 2 to 3 week lead time | NA and NB |
| Leroy Engineering | Robbins, heated glass window; vinyl or cloth; three colours | NC, 2006-2015 |
| RSpeed | Robbins economy tan vinyl, one piece, no zipper, glass window with or without defroster; two-year warranty; rain rail replacement an optional extra | 1990-2005 |
Moss states a 12-month warranty against defects in material and workmanship and says it "does not cover labor, failure of a related component, failure resulting from faulty installation". For the rest, the warranty terms on the pages I read were not stated; ask before ordering.
What the sellers say about fit
- The glass window was built by Mazda for 1999-2005 cars. RSpeed says a 1990-97 car needs straps installed into the frame to use it.
- Zipper or not on an NA. RSpeed says the zipper option gives the best top up and down performance on 1990-97 cars "because original 1st gen frames are not spring loaded".
- The rain rail. RSpeed recommends replacing it, especially if the current one has been in service over five years. Leroy includes a new one with NA and NB tops. Search summaries say the NC top must reuse the car's own rain rail; I did not see that on a page I could open.
- Colour. A 2018 forum complaint (below) came from ordering a tan top for a car with a parchment interior. Moss lists its Robbins NA and NB tops as fitting 1990-2005, and a poster in that thread says it sells one tan shade for all NB years (I did not check the swatches). Check the colour against your car's year and, if in doubt, ask the seller before ordering.
- Who the seller prefers. Leroy says Robbins tops are its "first choice for all Miata's" and used in "100% of our soft top installs". That is a shop's preference, not a test.
The ND (2016 on)
I found no ND top on the Moss or Leroy pages I read. Search results point to Robbins tops for the 2016 on cars, and to a Convertible Top Guys page for the 2016-21 Miata. I could not open the Convertible Top Guys page (it came back unreadable) or Robbins' own site (it refused my request), so those are leads, not read pages.
What owners say
I read five Miata.net forum threads, from 2012 to 2019. They are individual owners' opinions, some of them old, and posters disagree; read them as a sample of experience, not a verdict. I have not put their prices here, for the reason above.
- Vinyl or cloth, NA and NB (December 2014). Most posters who had fitted a Robbins cloth top were pleased. One said cloth looks better and is not stiffened by cold when you raise or lower it, but gets dirty faster and needs washing and re-waterproofing; he would choose vinyl next time. Another had cloth for 11 years without waterproofing it. Fitting times posters gave ran from one full day to about 10 hours over two days: one called it tedious, not difficult, and another said a second pair of hands at the end helped. Two posters advised buying new tension cables and a rain rail with the top; one added that there is a left and a right cable, and swapping them puts lumps in the top above the windows.
- Factory top against Robbins, NC (August 2014). Several posters preferred the Robbins cloth top to Mazda's. One said a new factory top failed in 3 years and that Mazda only warranted it for one year; he believed Robbins' warranty ran longer, which is his recollection, not something I checked. Another poster warned that Robbins' warranty needs a professional install, and that many installers on its website no longer exist in his area. Another said a used top still on its frame can cost less than a new top plus a fitter.
- Having someone else fit it, NB (July to September 2012). Advice: use an auto upholstery shop and ask which top it recommends; avoid a shop that has never fitted a Miata top or does not know what a rain rail is; take photos of how the old top sits before it comes off; and ask the local Miata club who it uses. One poster's friend bought a top online and the installer and the seller each blamed the other. The original poster found that two shops would not fit a top bought elsewhere. One poster said he dislikes the one-piece rear window design and linked his reasons.
- A complaint about Robbins and Moss, NB (May 2018). The poster bought a tan Robbins canvas top through Moss for a 2004 car whose interior is Mazda's parchment shade, and found the colours did not match after fitting it. Other posters pointed out that the NB came in tan (1999-2002) and parchment (2000 SE and 2003-05), so he had received what was listed, and he says Moss told him it could not be returned once fitted. He also found the fitting instructions vague about the rear strap studs, and the top so tight that four people were needed to latch it. The thread was heated and most replies sided with the sellers; the practical points are to check the colour against your car's year before ordering, to expect a new top to be stiff at first, and that posters' usual remedy was to park it in the sun with weight on the front bow and leave it latched. Another poster said a Robbins top should be fitted by a professional.
- The cost of a new ND top (May 2019). Posters said dealers usually pass the job to a local top shop, and that a dealer may order the whole assembly where only the fabric needs replacing; one whose top was replaced under warranty got the fabric only. In May 2019 a poster saw a Robbins top for the 2016 on car listed on Robbins' site that Moss did not sell. That was seven years ago.
Not covered yet
- Robbins' own site, for fit and warranty. Its pages refused my request.
- A seller for a rear window alone, for a top whose fabric is good. Search results showed used glass on eBay and hardtop windows at Go Miata; I did not open them.
- An ND top seller whose page I could read.
- Anyone who fits tops, by region. The 2012 thread above gives advice on choosing one but no list.
