NC and ND owners ask what wheel offset is safe and how to stop front-end paint chips. This page lists what sellers describe and what an owner thread said. The NA and NB wheels are on another page and the ND's tires on its own. It is not a repair guide.

How to read it. Seller claims are as read on each seller's own page on 2 October 2026. Owner accounts are from Miata.net forum threads, dated below, and are individual opinions, not advice. There are no prices on this page, and nothing here was bought or tested.

What an owner thread said

  • The right NC offset (January 2010). An owner found that a sister site of Tire Rack gave an NC offset range of 35 to 45 mm for 16x6.5 to 19x8 wheels, while another site listed 42 to 55, and that he had read the stock offset is 55 mm. One reply said the wheel industry is still hanging on to the NB's offsets and that the correct aftermarket NC offsets for 7.5 or 8 inch wheels are 48 to 50 mm, with many 7-inch wheels at 45 mm. A Tire Rack representative said the affiliate's numbers are not the same as Tire Rack's recommendations. (Miata.net thread; first page, offset figures are posters' claims.)

Search results for other Miata.net threads give the NC bolt pattern as 5x114.3 and the ND's as 4x100, so wheels do not interchange between them, and describe the ND's stock offset as 45 mm with 17x7.5 and 17x8 as common upgrades; I did not read those threads, so treat them as leads and check with your wheel seller.

Paint protection film on the ND

  • Does it help? (May 2020). An ND owner in Sweden posted a video showing a large stone hit that damaged the film and, he believed, a little of the paint, and said the paint was barely damaged. Another ND owner said local interstate resurfacing began the month he bought his car and he was glad he fitted film. (Miata.net thread; first page.)

Search results for other Miata.net threads say ND owners find the paint chips quickly, that a ceramic coating or wax will not stop chips, and that film itself gets chipped after a year or two; I did not read those threads, so treat them as leads.

Not covered yet

  • ND wheel fitment from a thread I read, wheel spacers, and the ND's front lip and body parts.
  • Installers, and how long film really lasts: sellers state 3, 8 and 10 years, which I could not check (one retailer page I tried had gone).
